New potential Westover football coach has UGA ties
A potential new Westover High School football coach will bring a little bit of the University of Georgia to Albany.
Following a vote from the Dougherty County Board of Education Monday night, the board will begin negotiating for Olten Downs to be the new head coach.
Olten Downs, currently an assistant coach at Georgia Southern and has had previous coaching experience at UGA under Mark Richt and Kirby Smart, was approved for the job Monday night by the Dougherty County School Board.
At the high school level, Downs has coached at Carver High School in Columbus, Riverdale High School and Creekside High School.
Westover Principal William Chunn called Downs the “right man at the right time,” to grow Westover’s football program.
“Coach Downs is the right man at the right time for Westover football. He is a proven coach with an impressive, championship track record that will take our program to the next level. We are very excited about the future of Westover Football,” Chunn said.
"I'm confident that Coach Downs will make a positive impact on the lives of our student-athletes both on the field and off," DCSS Athletic Director Lea Henry said. "He's proven that he knows how to win on the field in some successful programs and that he's just as good of a teacher as he is a coach. We're excited about all he has to offer."
