Bridge to open within hours
What Albany residents knew as the Broad Avenue Bridge will reopen Wednesday as the Broad Avenue Memorial Bridge.
The bridge was closed back in February 2009 after the Georgia Department of Labor deemed it unfit for travel.
The Broad Avenue Memorial Bridge was originally built in 1920 to honor those Veterans from Dougherty County who fought in World War One.
Veterans, local and state officials will march from the east end of the bridge to the center where the ceremony will take place, starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
Albany State University's Veterans Day program will coincide with the city's bridge dedication.
Albany Mayor Dorothy Hubbard says this is an exciting time for the city. This is brushing the community and shoes respect to all out veterans who have given so much.
City manager Sharon Subadan says this bridge reopening feeds into the redevelopment of Downtown, Albany.
