The topic that's rarely discussed

It's a topic we rarely, if ever report on but today is an exception.

It's a topic we rarely, if ever report on.

We're talking about suicides.

The reason we don't cover them, is usually out of respect for the family.

But, on Wednesday, two U.S. Senators offered a resolution to make September, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

Locally we found that Dougherty County has had eight suicides so far, which at this point is down from last year.

Colquitt County has had three this year which is also down from last year.

Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler says, "they don't want to be a burden on their family but they fail to realize that their family has to bare that burden of suicide, so it's still a burden on them and suicide is not the way out."

Officials add that if you do have suicidal thoughts, please see a counselor, a pastor, or talk with your family.
