Sumter deputies suspended for trespassing
The Sumter County Sheriff's Office received a complaint about a possible criminal trespass at a location in the county.
The investigation showed that three deputies made entry into a location without consent of the owner. Sheriff Pete Smith says that all deputies involved, along with their supervisor, were immediately placed on suspension pending further review of the complaint.
Since the victim did not want to press charges, Sheriff Smith reached out to the District Attorney's office about the incident and was advised that their office would not purse charges and would allow the sheriff's office to handle the situation internally.
Smith says that all involved, including the supervisor, was disciplined according to the policy and says that this behavior is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
Sheriff Smith adds, "I apologize to the citizens of Sumter County and want to insure the safety of them and their property."
