Plant Mitchell retired unit smoke stacks to be demolished
Georgia Power has announced that it will be removing retired exhaust stacks for retired units at Plant Mitchell on Sunday morning.
Company officials say they are working with multiple agencies including Georgia Department of Natural Resources, local law enforcement and public safety to coordinate the controlled demolition.
Visibility of the demolition will be limited by restricted access to surrounding property. Onlookers are cautioned not to trespass on private property or to block traffic in attempting to view the demolition. Prior to the demolition, law enforcement and the DNR will establish an Exclusion Zone (see attached map) to ensure a safe buffer around the site. As a precaution, Radium Springs Road will be closed in front of the plant from 5 a.m. until 8 a.m. Sunday. The stretch of Flint River that runs along Radium Springs Road next to the plant will also be closed to any waterway traffic from 6 a.m. until 8 a.m. while the demolition occurs.
The stack demolition is the next step in the dismantlement of the retired power plant.
