Organization works to end after school hunger
Second Harvest of South Georgia is working to make sure no child is hungry after school.
The organization is ramping up their after school feeding program called Kid's Cafe.
Here's how it works, Second Harvest partners with existing after school programs like YMCA and Girls Inc.
Second Harvest provides the food and their partners provide the after school program.
The Chief Marketing Officer of Second Harvest of South Georgia, Eliza McCall says on any given day they feed thousands of kids in south Georgia.
McCall says feeding kids after school is crucial.
"For example my rising first grader eats lunch at 10:45 in the morning so that means his classmates may not have anything to eat until presumably 7:15 the next morning because so many of these families rely heavily on school breakfast and school lunch," says McCall.
The food is partially reimbursed by the Child and Adult Feeding Program and t he rest comes from private contributions, according to McCall.
