Miss ASU reigns supreme in national competition
Despite going up against larger colleges and universities, Albany State University's Miss Albany State Asia Cook was named the winner of the 2012-2013 National Ultimate Reign Competition by Verizon Wireless.
The competition was open to all reigning Kings and Queens of Historically Black Colleges and Universities who support their community.
Cook received 10,500 votes â" 15% more than the second place candidate â" to win $15,000 towards furthering her community campaign with the American Red Cross' Unlock The Life Initiative, a $5,000 scholarship, and a Verizon Wireless tech pack worth almost $1,500.
Cook says although she was doubtful of the competition that included much larger and more recognizable schools, she decided to give it a try and realized if you put your mind to it, anything is possible.
"Even though I am coming from a smaller school, to know that I can encourage this way, it motivates me to be a better queen. It motivates me to be able to just push my community forward," said Cook.
Although her reign is almost over, Cook says she plans to use the funding to hold as many fundraisers and events as possible in the next few months.
