Lee County High to play in National Championship
The Lee County High School Trojans football team are celebrating their victory in the 6A state championship on Tuesday.
They secured a blowout win of 14-0 against North side Warner Robins in Atlanta.
Many thought their season was over, but Thursday night the coach and ESPN announced that the team was selected to play in the Geico State Champions Bowl Series on ESPNU.
Head football coach Dean Fabrizio said his guys deserve this.
"Last year we won the state championship here on our home field and that was a special experience and this year to win at this Mercedes-Benz Stadium, one of the premier sporting venues in the country, was a very special experience," said Coach Fabrizio. "I don't know if I'd rate one over the other, they were both special in their own way."
The coach went on to talk about the upcoming game they now get to play in.
"To play in the Geico Bowl, which matches state champions from two states and kind of a National Championship type match up," said Coach Fabrizio. "We'll be playing Saint Francis, which is the state champions out of Maryland and ranked in all polls in the top three or four in the country and even better as we get to host it in Leesburg."
The Geico Bowl will be held at Lee County High School on December 22 and it will be aired on ESPNU.
