Flu season is quickly approaching but there are ways to protect yourself from getting sick.

According to Dr. Charles Ruis with the Department of Public Health, right now is the perfect time to get your flu shot.

Flu season starts around November and can last up until March.

There are certain groups of people who are especially susceptible to getting the flu including the elderly, those with diabetes, those with kidney problems and pregnant women.

"The influenza virus will generally affect 20 to 30 percent of the population every year. So a lot of people are going to be sick and miss time at work and school because of the flu," said Ruis.

According to Dr. Ruis, getting the flu shot will guarantee that you will not get the flu although, it does take about two weeks before you are fully protected by your flu shot.

If you do find yourself feeling flu-like symptoms, stay home from work and school and seek medical care.
