Dougherty County Sheriff's Office warns to be on alert for more fraudulent calls
The Dougherty County Sheriff's Office is warning you about people who may be trying to steal your money over the phone.
They said these people are most likely within the prison system right now and are impersonating members of the sheriff's office and even a local judge.
According to Captain Craig Dodd, they call people and tell them they have a warrant or outstanding fine they need to pay with Green Dot cards or iTunes gift cards.
Captain Dodd said the sheriff's office will never call you over the phone or ask for payment in those forms.
He said people lost money as recently as Friday from this type of crime locally.
The best solution is to avoid traps like these as a whole, according to Captain Dodd.
"If you don't recognize the number calling you, don't answer it," he said. "If it's important, they'll leave you a voicemail, and then you really know who they are."
Captain Dodd said if you receive a call like this or believe you could be a victim of this crime, call the sheriff's office to report it.
