The Crisp County Sheriff's Office gave local students a reason to smile right before the holidays this year.

The Sheriff's Office gave out 18 free bicycles, one to a child in each third grade class in the county.

Earlier in December, the Sheriff's Office went to different schools, teaching students about bicycle safety. In return, the third grade student who wrote the best bicycle safety essay in each class was awarded with a new ride.

Sheriff Billy Hancock says he looks forward to surprising the kids who are always so excited to see the bicycles.

"The look on the children's faces, it's like they are glowing with excitement. It is amazing some of the stories I hear too. One little girl was awarded a bike who said she wouldn't be able to afford one otherwise and it was exactly what she wanted," said Hancock.

The Governor's Office of Highway Safety donates a helmet for each child who got a bicycle as well.

This is the fourth year the Sheriff's Office has surprised students with the new rides. He says it is always a good way for the Sheriff's Office to kick off the holiday season.
