Coroner gets stuck in Puerto Rico helping Maria victims
Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler went to Puerto Rico to aid in recovery efforts following Hurricane Irma.
While he was helping with recovery, another hurricane swept through the island.
Fowler assisted with the Disaster Medical Assistance Teams to ensure people were getting the necessary care through the hurricane.
Fowler and his team were stuck in Puerto Rico a week longer than originally planned due to Hurricane Maria.
Of the 21 natural disasters Fowler has worked, he said Hurricane Maria was definitely one of the worst.
The coroner said, “Family members were standing in line for five and a half to six hours just to get gas and you had family members a few days later trying to get ice.”
Fowler was able to get back from Puerto Rico Friday evening.
