The Cordele Police Department hosted their annual National Night Out Against Crime event on Wednesday.

The department also turned it into community “Back to School” supply give away. Kids went home with bags filled with supplies to help them kick off the school year.

The purpose is for locals to get to know officers on a more personal level, and the response helped officers realize they are connecting with the community.

People, who attended the event, said it’s important for people, especially kids, to get to know officers.

“Sometimes kids are scared of them, so if they see them in this atmosphere that they’re at, they’re able to interact with them, and maybe next time they see them, they won’t be so afraid of them,” said Brooke Marshall, resident, said.

Even though the actual event is celebrated on the first Tuesday of August, officers believe the event had the same effect on Wednesday.
