According to the CDC, suicide rates are increasing across the US.

If you know someone that may battle with a mental health illness, it's important to check on them.

That's according to licensed professional counselor Andy Martin.

But, checking in on your loved ones isn't as easy as it sounds, according to Martin.

He suggests starting by asking your loved one are they okay.

Martin says, "It's important to ask people to meet someone where they are you don't want to come right out and ask have you thought about killing yourself? You want to ask them how they've been feeling."

If you or someone you know is thinking about suicide the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255.
