Officials say if you're going to use fireworks during your New Year’s Eve celebration, be sure to keep your safety in mind.

The Albany Fire Department said you can lose your hands and eyes because fireworks can cause severe damage to the human body.

Plans Review Specialist Carlton Russell said don't drink while trying to light fireworks.

Russell said if you're under 18-years-old, you shouldn't be handling fireworks on your own.

Make sure you fully understand how to properly light them and read the labels beforehand.

He said if you still have debris from the recent storms, that debris has been drying out, making it easy to catch fire.

"You don't want to fire them off anywhere near the storm debris,” Russell. “A lot of people I’ve noticed have debris on top of their houses in their gutters. That could be another place a fire could start."

Albany Fire Department said it's crucial to buy fireworks that are legal. You can trust a well-known establishment around town to get them.
