The Albany Recreation and Parks Department hosted its first Special Olympics softball invitational, the City of Champions Fall Softball Classic, on Saturday.

Albany ARC Diamondbacks, Colquitt Packers, Valdosta Hurricanes and the ARPD Hot Shotz all participated in the event that provided the teams with the opportunity to play in a game-like atmosphere before the Georgia State Fall Games in October.

"Our goal for the invitational was to get the teams together, to get all the athletes in game-like situations whether batting or fielding the ball," said Franessa Stalter, who is the manager of the Health, Wellness and Community Events for ARPD. "Instead of like practice conditions, they're in actual tournament conditions with real, straight-up ASA officials and keeping score and everything like that."

Albany has held the Georgia State Fall Games in the past, but this year, it'll be held in Gainesville, Ga.
