Westover Aims to Run Through Cairo
With a win against Crisp County last week, the Westover Patriots now control their own playoff destiny. With a win on Friday against Cairo, the Patriots could be in control of a lot more - a region title would come in to picture for the Pats.
As the patriots running game goes, so does the success of the team and that won't change Friday against Cairo.
Last week, the Patriots punished Crisp County with sophomore fullback Shannon Saunders. The fullback was three feet shy of 200 yards in the 20-6 win over the Cougars.
Patriots head coach Octavia Jones has been quiet about which of his standout runners will start, Saunders or Deion Greene, but both expect to factor heavily into the game-plan.
"Shannon's a load, he's tough to tackle and he creates some problems for defenses...if he's able to do that tomorrow (Friday) night that will help us out a lot," Jones said. "We have two great backs that can give defenses fits, so the key is the offensive line must control the line of scrimmage, if we can do that than we stand a good chance to win the ball game."
Cairo and Westover kick off from Hugh Mills Stadium on Friday night at 7:30. The Patriots were blanked by the Syrupmakers last season 45-0.
