Watermelon Invitational a success once again
In the seventh year of the Watermelon Invitational, the event is at an all time high.
Twenty softball teams from high schools across the state of Georgia flocked to Cordele this weekend to take part in the tournament. Teams are guaranteed five games of play, if weather permits.
The Invitational has grown in size every year. In the early years, there were ten to twelve teams participating. Now, the event's organizer, Kevin Blampied, has to turn teams away.
The annual tournament also acts as a fundraiser for the Crisp County High Athletic Department, and particularly the softball program. Blampied said the funds help with equipment, facilities, and uniforms.
But for the girls on the field, the weekend serves as an opportunity to improve.
"The main thing is you get to see girls from different parts of the state," Blampied said. "Eventually, you may see these teams down the road."
