The GHSA I-AAAA region in southwest GA is tough, and if you are going to sit on top you have to be physical. For the Cairo Syrupmakers that is exactly who they are. Last year the red & black ended the season with a great 9-3 overall record, but with an even more impressive perfect region record of 7-0.
The only down fall to last year was the lost in the second round of the playoffs against Mary Persons High School. Getting cut short of making it to the Georgia Dome is bad enough, so look for the syrupmakers to bounce back this season with a deep run to the state finals.
Leading the way for Cairo is head coach Tom Fallaw who is entering his 11th year for the program. The only question coach Fallaw has is who is going to get the final decision at starting quarterback.
The starting quarterback position is still up for grabs, but coach Fallaw has it narrowed down to just two. The two young men competing will be upcoming juniors with little to no experience for the varsity.
Their is one relief for Cairo and that is the big offensive line blocking for the soon to be starting quarterback with some returning players out on the field. Look for the syrupmakers at home this Friday as they play a scrimmage game that is a make up due to all the heavy rain from last week.
The regular season will get underway next week for Cairo on the road against Thomasville, and kickoff is at 7:30.
