Last season the Southland Raiders made it to the playoffs and fell one game shy of making it to the state championship in GISA-AAA. After finishing their season 8-5 overall they are ready to make another great run in the playoffs, but this time win the state title. During the offseason Southland brought back a familiar face to the sidelines to take over as head coach; Rod Murray. Murray coached for the Raiders six years ago as an assistant, but now he returns as head coach.
Coach Murray said, "It great to be back here where I started my coaching career and Southland has made the transition so easy."
Entering this season Coach Murray has a great group of guys moving forward. The Raiders have 17 seniors and loads of experience on both sides of the ball. Starting with the offense, Southland will run a Base Wing-T offense that is led by returning Quarterback Ryan Weaver, along with returning teammates Fullback Bryan Stone, Tailback Colt Stevens, and Tight End Tayler Weldon.
Coach Murray said, "I like the guys coming back because it gives us options on both sides of the ball."
Southland will open their season against the defending state champs, Westfield on the road on August 22nd.
