Now that the regular season has concluded, schools are preparing for one of the biggest tournaments of the year; the region tournament.
For Region 1-AAAA girls, Monroe is the heavy favorite, who entered the tournament as the number one seed and a perfect region record; 14-0.
The boys on the other hand, have been in a constant battle for the number one seed all season long and the Westover Patriots earned that top spot late in the season over Worth County. The top four seeds earned themselves a bye for the first round.
Picking up with the early game as the Albany Squaws took on the Cairo Lady Syrupmakers. Albany struggled with turnovers in the second half which ended up costing them the game, 59-18. As for the other girls game, the Worth County Lady Rams battled it out against Americus-Sumter and the Lady Panthers. First half of the game Worth County was only down 17-21 and came within one point of tying to start the 3rd quarter, but they could not hold on as they fall 56-40.
Finally, over to the boys and starting with Dougherty County taking on Monroe, entering the second half the Trojans found themselves in a five point hole. Dougherty never getting out of that hole ended up falling to the Tornadoes 61-38. As for the late game between Cairo and Americus-Sumter, the Panthers fought hard and kept it close, and in the end paid off because they earned themselves a win over the Syrupmakers 69-57.
Round Two begins Wednesday at Westover High School, starting with Cairo taking on Westover at 7 p.m. and Americus-Sumter taking on Dougherty at 4 p.m. for the girls. As for the boys, Americus-Sumter will take on Crisp at 8:30 p.m. and Monroe will play Albany at 5:30 p.m.
