Thirteen years is a long time. It seems even longer in Irwin County.
The Indians have lost thirteen straight football games to their rivals just a few miles down the road, the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes. Last year, Fitzgerald dominated from start to finish in a 31-0 route.
This year, the matchup is set for Friday night in Ocilla. Even though it's a home game that could end thirteen years of frustration, head coach Jon Lindsey isn't treating it differently than any other game for Irwin County.
"Until we beat them again it's really not a big rival," Lindsey said. "We've approached it like any other game week."
At Fitzgerald, head coach Jason Strickland is taking a different approach with his team.
"All these guys know everybody that plays for Irwin and Irwin knows everybody that plays here," Strickland said. "But at the end of the day it's a football game and it's one that we need to play well to win."
