It's officially Buddy Ball season.
The Albany Recreation and Parks Department and the Albany Area YMCA have partnered together for this program that helps youths with disabilities play basketball. Registration began January 2nd and continues until January 23rd.
The goal is to pair each athlete with a volunteer.
The age groups are 6-12 and 13-21 years old. The games will be played on Monday evenings from January 27th to March 3rd.
"I think the athletes that register and participate gain a sense of self-worth," said Fran Statler, the manager of health, wellness, and community events at the ARPD. "Volunteers that buddy with them get a sense of accomplishment."
Participants and volunteers can register at the ARPD office on 1301 N. Monroe on weekdays between 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
