It's been a special basketball season at Pelham High School, but it's not over yet.
The girls' team, under Antonia Tookes, is a perfect 23-0 entering the region semifinals on Thursday night. The boys, under Laron Smith, have run the table in region 1-AA.
Both Hornets' teams are two wins away from a region championship, but that's not the only similarity between the two teams. Both have deep benches, balanced scoring attacks, and high hopes for the state playoffs.
But the coaches know that Pelham's dominance so far this season will make the postseason that much more difficult.
"There's a target on our backs," Smith said. "You can't take anything or anybody for granted."
The Lady Hornets might be facing even more pressure, since they haven't lost all season. But the approach never changes for Tookes and company.
"Just play every game up to their level, and they should be fine," said Tookes in regards to her team's mindset. "That's how I keep them from feeling pressure."
Pelham hosts the remainder of the 1-AA tournament on Thursday and Friday night.
