Albany State needed one more win for the 2011 SIAC baseball championship. Unfortunately, it would have to come against a familiar opponent and pitcher.
Stillman College and Tigers ace Josh Cagle. Cagle defeated ASU once during the regular season, and added another one in a complete game, nine strikeout performance in the Tigers tournament win over Albany State on Friday.
Sunday's game gave Cagle and Stillman a third win against Albany State, and this one was for the title. The Tigers defeated the Golden Rams 3-2 at Albany's Paul Eames Park on Sunday.
It was ASU with a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning behind the pitching of Ken Nesbitt. But with the score tied at two in the eighth, the Rams pitcher gave up a bloop single giving the Tigers a late 3-2 lead. That run proved to be the winning one.
Theodore Tramontana popped up the Cagle offering in the Rams last at-bat which ended ASU's hopes of a second straight SIAC Tournament title.
Middle infielders Corbin Williams and William Smalls plus pitchers Ken Nesbitt and Greg Johnson were selected to the SIAC All-Tournament team. The tournament MVP was fittingly Sunday's championship winning pitcher Josh Cagle who struck out 12 Rams and allowed no earned runs in the title game.
Stillman College, located in Tuscaloosa, AL, dedicated their tournament championship to the victims of last week's tornadoes and storms.
