      New Era at Americus-Sumter

After a 4-6 season, Americus-Sumter didn't look too far to find a new head coach.

They plucked Reggie Mitchell from Tift County High School to resurrect a program that has been fairly mediocre for the last few seasons. Mitchell was the defensive coordinator at Tift County, but has head coaching experience at Albany and Sherwood Christian.

Mitchell inherits a team with question marks, but there is some talent on the roster. Jonathan Thomas is a dual threat quarterback and he is partnered with Wesley Fields in the backfield, who rushed for over 1,000 yards last season. A strong group of seniors should stabilize the defense Mitchell is installing.

But Americus-Sumter is still a program in transition.

"We're trying to establish a foundation here," Mitchell said. "Making sure these kids are fundamentally sound, making sure they know how to compete, making sure they know how to play the game."
