Local track athletes head to Junior Olympics

The Track & Field Junior Olympics will be held next week in Texas, and Southwest Georgia will be well-represented.

Forty members of the Sapphire Rough Ryders, a track club in Albany, will be competing. All of the relay teams qualified, as well as sprinters, shot putters, and even a race walker.

"We're just excited," said track athlete Zakirra McKinnon. "I feel like every one of us can beat everyone in Houston."

It's not just about the upcoming week, though. Past Sapphire club members have thrived at the high school and college levels.

"It can elevate their minds," said coach Paul Jones. "To get in college, and want to be better, want to be the best."
