Lady Tornadoes Challenge History

For a high school basketball team, reaching the GHSA State Playoffs elite eight round is already an elite feeling. For Monroe High, one more win Saturday would shake up the school's history books.

The Lady Tornadoes are vying for their first state playoff final four appearance in 23 years. The last time the girl's team reached the state semifinal round was the 1988-1989 season.

Often this Monroe team has been overlooked this year, but they don't embrace any type of underdog role. That's a good attitude to have for their upcoming opponent. Washington County is currently ranked as Georgia's top AAA team. The Golden Hawks haven't lost a game in two seasons.

Tornado Coach Cheryl Cheeks may not buy that her team's an underdog, but she is buying what a win could do for her program.

"It would mean a would be awesome...they've (the team) worked so hard especially my seniors who have been here all four years. I think they deserve it because they've put in so much time and so much effort to get here," Cheeks said.
