Hurricanes Sweep Through Smith/Benson Relays
For the past 26 years, the Georgia Track and Field Finals for girls have made their run through Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany, GA. And for the past 21 years, the L.C. Smith and Winfred Benson Relays have been a dress rehearsal for the championship later in the spring.
Enter the Monroe Girls team. The back-to-back State Champs are now the back-to-back Smith/Benson winners.
The Hurricanes beat the rest of the girl's competition 108.5 to 91 Saturday afternoon. Monroe's Mimieux Land compiled 28 points in her events, alone. Land won the Triple and Long jump. Alexandria Childs placed first in the Discus Throw, and third in Shot Put. Even with the decisive win, first-year Monroe Head Coach Latoya Johnson still sees room for improvement.
"We're doing well overall, but our key people that let us excel in our events came up short with injuries today. We may be a little downâ|maybe six to eight points per event. Even though that only sounds like a four or five point differenceâ|those points add up," Johnson said.
Girl Monroe runners were injured during heats of the 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay.
Bainbridge High School won the Boys team title 112-84 over Westover.
