From Purple Hurricane to Yellow Jacket to Patriot

Fitzgerald High School has been known for years for the greatness of their football team, and year after year found the playoffs. From the years 2005-2008, there was a young player who shocked Purple Hurricane nation once he stepped onto the field. Jemea Thomas wore the purple and gold as a starter since his freshman year at Fitzgerald High School. When 2008 arrived Thomas had just become AJC's Defensive Player of the Year for Class AA and had signed to continue his football career at Georgia Tech.

Thomas played for the Yellow Jackets from 2009-2013, playing in all 14 games as a true freshman. By the time his final season was over Thomas had played in 54 career games, tying for most in Georgia Tech history. Not only did Thomas preform on the field, but in the classroom by earning his undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech in Business Administration. By May 2014, his football career would only be beginning.

In May 2014, Thomas was one of the many college football athletes who entered in the 2014 NFL Draft and by the 6th round his named was called. The New England Patriots picked Jemea Thomas from Georgia Tech. Thomas is one of six Fitzgerald High School former players to ever play in the NFL.

For the last six weeks, Thomas has been in Boston training with the Patriots for next season. The Patriots gave every player some time off and Thomas came home to be recognized by his community. For the city of Fitzgerald, June 30, 2014 will forever be known as Jemea Thomas Day.

Thomas reports back with the team on July 19th to prepare for the 2014 NFL season as a New England Patriot.
