For the entirety of Gordy Gruhl's career as basketball coach at Deerfield-Windsor, the Knights have been a G.I.S.A. powerhouse. This year, they're gunning for another state championship.
Gruhl's team is fresh off close losses to the top two teams in Alabama, but he thinks they're right where they need to be right now.
This year's group is led by four seniors, but ten or eleven guys will get minutes on any given night.
Deerfield likes to push the tempo and pressure teams, and they have been effective in executing that style of play so far. But Gruhl would like to see more patience in the half-court offense and more consistency from game to game.
Still, the Knights are excited for what lies ahead as the region season approaches.
"We're the team to beat until somebody beats us," Gruhl said. "We're certainly beatable, but it's gonna take an awful good team to beat us."
