It's good to be a catcher for the Darton State baseball team.
Catchers Tripp Calhoun and Davis Knapp will move a state west to continue their baseball careers as both signed with division one programs on Friday. Calhoun moves on to Troy University, Knapp has signed with the University of South Alabama.
The goal for every player is to continue with a baseball career, and the Cavaliers players credit Darton's program for that next step.
"When you have a team that puts it all together and actually plays and wins, it catches people's attention. When we got highly ranked last year, got up to 12 (in the NJCAA National Poll). Coach (Scot) Hemmings said he had people blowing up his phone," Knapp said.
"The baseball program in particular has been jump started with what (Hemmings) brought and I'm glad I've been able to be a part of it," Calhoun said.
More signings are coming soon for Coach Hemmings. The second-year Darton State coach expects at least three more players to sign division one scholarships. Calhoun, Knapp and the rest of the Cavaliers begin another season of Darton baseball in late January.
