Darton State College basketball tips off this weekend hosting the Darton Classic. Two games in two days with a lot of new faces on the Lady Cavaliers squad.
Under second-year Cavalier coach Lea Henry, Darton State is working with eight freshmen on the roster, but the overall talent of the team has improved.
Sophomore leading scorer Michelle Mitchell, along with two other sophomores, will be expected to lead the Cavaliers throughout the 2012 season.
A 20 win campaign in 2011 set a high benchmark for Coach Henry. Consistent defense was the key to the strong season- that is expected to continue this winter at Cavalier Arena.
"Defense is just a thing of confidence, just getting after it. This year, if everybody wants to get the ball...get after it. We're going to be pretty good," Mitchell said.
"We're having fun. These kids have worked real hard and they have great attitudes and just a group of nice, classy young ladies, so we're working on being a little bit meaner on the court," Coach Henry said.
The Lady Cavaliers will be without last year's starting point guard Lauren Johnson. Johnson signed with Hampton University during the summer.
Darton State opens the season with West Georgia Tech Friday at 2 PM.
