Darton anticipates big seasons
Darton State soccer is back.
Bart Sasnett's men and Ken Veilands and the women have started official practice, and they've done so with some expectations. The men are ranked eighth in the NJCAA preseason polls, and the women are seventh.
But both coaches know that doesn't mean much.
"We take these small, attainable goals, and if we keep attaining those goals we should be in the national tournament," Veilands said.
Veilands forecasts a different style for this season's team, one that's more possession-oriented and balanced. The Lady Cavs have several players back. Brianna Lemerise, Janay Campbell, and Kristy Gash are among the key pieces returning.
"We've got to step up our game," Gash said. "And hopefully do better than last year."
The men's team has only two starters back from a year ago, Darwin Espinal and goalkeeper Adam Cahill. There's plenty of talent, but not much continuity.
Coach Sasnett is looking forward to this weekend's preseason scrimmage.
"I'm just hoping to see us come together and build a little rhythm," Sasnett said.
The Darton men will scrimmage Thomas University on Sunday in Thomasville. The women will scrimmage on Saturday and Sunday at home.
Both teams open their season at home on August 27th against Georgia Military.
