Crisp County Busts Second Round Slump

Crisp County baseball has been a favorite in the state playoffs for at least two years running. However, a round that hasn't been the favorite for any Cougar has been the second.

Losing two straight years at the "sweet 16" level, Crisp County head coach Bill Pate changed the ballgame. Pate and his players decided to schedule tougher competition in hopes of leading to a longer postseason.

At least for 2013, the scheduling paid off. Crisp County shed its second round slump in decisive fashion with 12-2 and 13-1 victories over Statesboro Wednesday.

Patience was the virtue in game two. In the second inning, the Cougars jumped on three straight walks by Statesboro pitcher Jordan Finch.

Taylor Walls drove a Finch pitch into left field scoring two runs as Crisp County grabbed a 5-0 lead. Senior ace Robert Daniel earned the game one victory. Landon Whitman received the win in game two.

Crisp County will host the winner of Northwest Whitfield and Stephens County in the GHSA State quarterfinals next Tuesday at 4 PM.
