Coach Knows Best, Westover Avoiding Playoff Traps

Few teams know the feeling of actually winning a state championship. Westover head coach Dallis Smith knows-- he's led two teams to GHSA-AAA state titles.

As the Patriots head in to another playoff game, Smith's knowledge is turning in to power.

Coach Smith busted out the 1998 and 2001 GHSA rings at practice Thursday. A gentle nudge or some incentive for the Patriots.

The team didn't need any extra help in Tuesday TMs first round playoff rout. The high flying 84-59 win over North Clayton spoke for itself. For a second round victory Saturday, Coach Smith is asking for the same intensity.

We just want to play with a lot of confidence...keep knocking down shots and play hard every night. We're not worried about trap games. We feel like we're over the hump now, Patriots guard T.J. Cromer said.

A lot of fight in them. They're coming around more...listening to what the coaches are trying to do. We have a couple of people that don't like to lose and they give their all, Coach Smith said.

Last season, the Patriots defeated Westside, Macon in the knockout rounds. Westover fully expects revenge to play a factor in this meeting. Just another way for the Patriots to avoid the trap.
