Business as Usual, Deerfield Wins Region Championship

In more ways than one, this was the game Deerfield Windsor basketball needed.

The Knights played for the region championship Saturday, of course, needing a win for the region's number one seed. But after dominating the regular season, the team also needed a close game.

Through three quarters Saturday, the Knights got their close game against Calvary Christian, and in the fourth quarter Deerfield shut the door with champion-type force.

There wasn't a whole lot of celebration from the Knights after the 65-44 victoryâ" this was a business meeting for the team that expects to accomplish more in 2013.

"We're certainly happy we won it, but we have some bigger fish to fryâ|so to speak. Hopefully, we're going to get two giant steps toward that final four next week," Knights head coach Gordy Gruhl said.

"We've been playing together since 10th grade. We fell short last year and to know we can put it all together and get it done in the end...have one of those banners in the gym. It would be amazing," Knights guard Ramello Carter said.

Deerfield begins the GISA State Playoffs against Webber Thursday. First round tip set for 8:30 PM at Macon's Tattnall Square.
