Albany State Softball Making Changes in 2012

It's a new season with mostly new players for the Albany State softball team- and that's just fine with the Lady Rams.

The ASU softball team opens their 2012 season at home Monday afternoon against the University of West Georgia. Rams Head Coach Robert Skinner says the team has adopted a totally new mentality.

"I think with the leadership we have from the assistant coach all the way down to the last player on the rosterĂ¢|has improved tremendously and it's going to be a different year," Coach Skinner said.

In 2011, the team struggled to a 17- 36 record due to injuries and other unforeseen losses to the ASU roster.

The Lady Rams added five freshmen to the 2012 roster including talented freshman pitcher Chelsea Hicks. SIAC preseason first-teamer Chaconna Marks is guaranteed to hold down the ASU defense, but Marks is most excited for the remodel done on the offense.

"Last year, we didn't have that many strong girls...matter of fact we didn't have that many girls period," Marks said. The sophomore catcher believes the Lady Rams power is vastly improved from 2011.

Monday's doubleheader against West Georgia is the first of four series' against tough competition. The Lady Rams host Georgia Southwestern, Rollins College, and Valdosta State in the first week. First pitch for every game is set for 1 PM.
