Albany State Quarterback Rescues Season Opener

There's no rest for the Albany State football team.

Less than 24 hours after their come from behind victory over Savannah State, the Golden Rams were back at work on Sunday basking in the elements of Tropical Storm Lee.

Rain won't stop these Rams, and it won't stop senior ASU quarterback Stanley Jennings, either.

Down 34-30 in the final minute, Jennings captained his team to the game-winning scoring drive. The preseason SIAC first-team quarterback punctuated the drive with a 12 yard touchdown run to give ASU a 37-34 victory over Savannah State in Macon's Music City Classic.

"I wasn't really worried about anything, but scoringâ|doing anything I could to help us win," a rain-soaked Jennings said on Sunday.

Jennings threw for almost 250 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday's season opener.

Rams Offensive Coordinator Uyl Joyner has come to expect these types of heroics from his senior quarterback.

"Typical Stanley...he always comes through for us. This is probably the third or fourth time since he's been here he came through for us in the end, and we're really happy we got a quarterback who can do that for usâ|but we don't want to see it all the time," Joyner said.

Albany State held a 19 point lead early in the second quarter before being outscored 27-3 to fall behind in the fourth 27-22.

Albany State hosts Wingate University for this Saturday's home opener. Kickoff is set for 7 pm at Albany Municipal Coliseum. The Golden Rams defeated the Bulldogs 30-28 last year.
