SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTGS) - Chatham County Sheriff John Wilcher says of four recent inmate deaths at his jail, three were from natural causes and one was a suicide.

In referring to the deaths from natural causes, Wilcher said, “You can’t predict when you will meet the maker.”

Wilcher held a news conference on the inmate deaths Tuesday at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office to underscore the transparency of jail operations, he said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has issued the following statement to Fox 28 about the inmate deaths:

Over the past several months, the GBI has conducted multiple inmate death investigations at the request of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office. These investigations are criminal investigations and when they are complete, the GBI’s findings will be turned over to the District Attorney for review and next steps.
