Corrections officer arrested for allegedly beating another prison official
DAVISBORO, Ga. -- A corrections officer was arrested on Thursday after authorities say she attacked a fellow officer while trying to enter Washington State Prison.
According to a Washington County arrest warrant, Lt. Charlene Edwards punched and kicked a correctional sergeant repeatedly at about 5 p.m. on March 10.
The warrant states that the incident took place after Edwards was unable to clear the metal detector and was told to undergo a more detailed private search by the sergeant.
While the sergeant was conducting the search, the warrant states that Edwards hit the woman in the face and knocked her to the floor. She then reportedly got on top of the woman and began to punch her repeatedly until help arrived.
The warrant states that the attack caused numerous lacerations, bruising, a black eye and an inflamed iris due to blunt force trauma.
Edwards was charged with battery and violation of oath by a public officer.
Gwendolyn Hogan of the Georgia Department of Corrections Office of Public Affairs said that Edwards was terminated from her job with the Georgia Department of Corrections on Wednesday after the investigation into the incident was completed.
