Tenn. homeowner, neighbor hold escaped Ga. inmates at gunpoint until authorities arrive
ATLANTA (WGXA) - Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says the two inmates who police say escaped a Georgia State Prison bus and killed two correctional officers Tuesday were captured in Tennessee.
Baldwin State Prison inmates Donnie Russell Rowe and Ricky Dubose were captured near Murfreesboro, Tennessee after being held at gunpoint by a homeowner and neighbor.
Nelly Miles with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports that the inmates held a couple captive in their Tennessee home for an undisclosed amount of time. Rowe and Dubose then stole the couple's car and a chase with authorities ensued.
During the chase, the inmates fired at least one shot at police vehicles but no one was injured.
The inmates then crashed the stolen car on I-24 and ran into nearby woods. Weapons were recovered from the crash site.
According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn, Rowe and Dubose ran to a home about six miles from the wreck and attempted to steal another vehicle, but the homeowner saw them. The homeowner called a neighbor for help and the two of them held the suspects at gunpoint until authorities could apprehend them.
"The burden of danger is off and that is the greatest relief we have," Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said in a press release.
They are now en route to the Rutherford County Jail and will be extradited back to Georgia.
"If they don't waive extrication there is a process call requisition where the governor of Georgia will send a warrant to the governor of Tennessee," Sills said. "There will be hearings but they're coming back. They're coming back as soon as possible."
"I don't look good, but trust me, I feel good," Sills said.
Sills again extended his condolences to the fallen officers' families and to the couple that was held captive in Tennessee.
"I'm sorry these people in Tennessee suffered whatever they suffered," Sills said. "They weren't injured but I can assure you that they were traumatized by these hoodlums coming into their home. I'm sorry as I can be and my sympathies to the families and I think you can understand. "
According to the GBI, Rowe is from Lewisburg, Tennessee, about 40 miles from Rutherford County.
Sills said they have already begun preparing for a trial.
"My sincere thanks to our local, state and federal law enforcement officers who assisted in the manhunt," said Deal. "Because of their tireless efforts, the public is safe. The pain endured by the families and loved ones of Sgt. Christopher Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue endures, however. We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service.”
Authorities say Rowe and Dubose shot and killed Billue and Monica on Highway 16 between Putnam and Sparta.
Evidence shows that the two ransacked a home in Madison, Georgia the same day. They were believed to be traveling in a white 2008 Ford F-250 with Georgia tag BCX 3572.
A reward of $130,0000 was offered for information leading to their arrests.
