Volunteers clean up the Flint River
Hundreds of volunteers come out by land and boat for the rivers alive initiative, a make a difference day project held each October.
Everything that goes into the river that wasn't put there by mother nature affects the ecosystem so it is important to keep our community clean and beautiful.
As numerous visitors make their way along the river banks, many leave their trash behind. The purpose of the Rivers Alive Initiative is to encourage people to throw away their trash when finished with it.
Most of what is find now are things that fishermen have left.
After nine years into this project, volunteers have found that there are no longer larger items like washing machines and refrigerators along the river bank. The only large item they come across these days is an occasional tire.
