Valdosta schools add a CDL examiner
Valdosta City Schools congratulates Mrs. Stephanie Joachim as our new commercial driver licensed (CDL) third party state examiner at the transportation department. It has been nine years since the Valdosta City Schools has had a CDL third party examiner.
A CDL third party examiner is a certified driver training instructor who has been approved to administer the road skills test to applicants. "As a CDL third party examiner, I will be responsible for the skills and road driving test for drivers who are to be granted a commercial driver's license," Mrs. Joachim informs.
The test is administered to applicants based on the Department of Public Safety's minimum federal requirements set forth in 49 CFR 383, which specify the knowledge and skills necessary for safe operation of commercial trucks and buses.
The examiner plays a key role in ensuring that the testing process is carried out correctly. The test consists of three segments and must be conducted in order: vehicle inspection; basic control skills; and the road test.
During the vehicle inspection, the CDL third party examiner checks the commercial vehicle's functioning ability which includes examining lights, brakes, turn signals, etc. to determine if the vehicle is safe to operate. The examiner also observes applicants performing pre-inspections of the engine and the components inside and outside of the vehicle.
Then the examiner instructs applicants to perform various maneuvers such as straight line backing, alley dock, sight-side parallel parking, conventional parallel parking, and offset backing in the commercial vehicle. Lastly, the examiner reviews the applicants' overall performance and informs them whether they pass or fail.
