      Valdosta man shot in the head

      The Valdosta Police Department responded to the 500 Block of West Street Monday night in response to a report of someone being shot.

      When officers arrived they found the victim, Samuel Sawyer, with a single gunshot wound to the head. Sawyer was transported to the South Georgia Medical Center Emergency Room.

      According to VPD they located Hubert Heflin who indicated he shot Sawyer; officers detained Heflin and secured the area.

      Heflin was taken to the Lowndes County Jail and will be charged with Aggravated Assault, Aggravated Battery, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

      Police say Sawyer is expected to recover from his injuries.
