Valdosta man arrested for false car theft report
A Valdosta man has been arrested after telling police his car was stolen, but officers say he traded it for illegal narcotics.
Investigators with Valdosta police say that on July 28, 55-year-old Scott Bennett reported his car stolen.
On August 8, the car was seen on I-75 in Cook County by a sheriff's deputy. As the vehicle entered into Lowndes County, Lowndes deputies began to pursue the vehicle.
The chase ended in a wreck for that vehicle and one deputy.
The suspects in the vehicle gave information which led them to believe that Bennett had lied about his vehicle being stolen. Evidence had then been recovered that Bennett had traded his vehicle.
Bennett was arrested at his home Friday morning and charged with false statement and false report of a crime.
“Due to the offender’s outright lie in this case, many lives were put in danger on Tuesday and a deputy wrecked his vehicle because this vehicle had been falsely reported stolen. We are very lucky that no one was injured. As has been previously mentioned, anyone that gives false information to law enforcement will be held accountable,” said Lieutenant Adam Bembry.
