Over the last week, 37 Valdosta children and their families were able to go shopping with local law enforcement and fire fighters for Christmas thanks to the donations of others.
27 law enforcement officers from agencies including the Valdosta Police Department, Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, Valdosta State University, Moody Air Force Base, Georgia State Patrol, Remerton Police Department, Georgia Department of Transportation, and the Echols County Sheriff's Office participated in the December 16 law enforcement event while over 15 Valdosta firefighters participated in the December 10 event.
The selection process of both programs is similar as children nominated for either program must live and attend school in the City of Valdosta and must be recommended by a police officer, firefighter, teacher or school principal. Both programs focus on providing for youth with financial needs, the fire department's program also seeks to identify and help Valdosta youth who have been victims of fire losses.
Wal-Mart also assisted with the events as they coordinated with staff to help make the events happen and provided an on-site pizza and cake party for the attendees.
