Utilities scam striking Albany businesses

Businesses have become targets for scammers. / WFXL File

A new scam targeting local businesses has started up in Albany.

Officials with Water, Gas, and Light, say business owners are receiving phone calls from scammers who say the customer's electricity will be cut off within the hour if they do not purchase a Green Dot card and make a payment. One customer was asked to pay $2,000 for late fees.

WG&L officials say so far, no one has fallen for the scam, but the thieves are changing up their methods by spoofing the main phone number of WG&L on caller IDs.

They warn customers to watch out for calls from 1(800)-345-5240 and that if you have any concerns, to call WG&L.
