Turner County students earn REACH scholarships
Four Turner County middle schoolers took a step toward their goals of reaching college on Tuesday.
They each earned REACH scholarships in a ceremony at Turner County Middle School on Tuesday afternoon. The students were nominated by teachers and went through a rigorous selection process, including interviews and applications.
The girls signed a contract at the ceremony, pledging to keep their grades and conduct up throughout middle school and high school. In return, each will receive a $10,000 college scholarship.
“I’ve coined the term ‘graduation is our motivation,’ and with that being said, we’re pushing them all the way,” principal Bernice Martin said. “It is an awesome opportunity. I’ve spoken to several of these girls, and they were very excited about today.”
The program was started by Governor and First Lady Deal in 2012. Recipients must attend a REACH-eligible university or technical college in Georgia, and many of those schools even match the scholarship money, which is spread over their four years.
