Just days after a failed start to a neighborhood watch program, Tift County Commissioner Melissa Chevers says dozens of people showed up on Thursday for a second-chance meeting.

With rising crime rates in Tifton and deputies responsible for a much larger area than they can cover at all times, Chevers and Captain Dennis Reese with the Tift County Sheriff's Office say they need the public to step up to make it a safe community again.

Around 30 residents sat through the meeting for tips on how they can assist officials in patrolling the streets.

Chevers says she hopes this is the turning point and the group will gain momentum to become a monthly occurrence to take the area.
